December, 2014, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization voted unanimously to give Westfield more than $7 million in federal grants for Westfield projects.
Of the $7 million plus, $3.3 million will be put towards the construction of the proposed Monon Bridge (for pedestrians) over State Road 32 at US 31.
Construction of the Monon Bridge is phase 5 of a seven phase construction/improvement plan, ultimately providing access via trails to most neighborhoods, downtown Westfield, and Grand Park.
Phase 7 will begin at Monon Trail Elementary with a trailhead that will serve year-round restroom facilities, and then extend up to 216th street.
Amenities for the trails will include a drinking fountain, bike rack, parking, dog waste station, benches and public restrooms.
The IMPO also allocated approximately $2 million for the potential construction of a roundabout at 186th and Springmill, where high pedestrian traffic and traffic congestion is anticipated. Plans for the intersection are currently being studied and discussed.
The remaining grant money will be used for future projects in Westfield.
